Debit-Card-PIN-Guidelines

1) Which practice has been made compulsory from 1 December, 2013 with regard to use of debit card at retail outlets? – Mandatory punching of debit card PIN number after swiping (This is intended to make bank debit card transactions more secure. In June 2013, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had extended the deadline for implementation of mandatory PIN punching at Point-of-Sales (PoS) and merchant outlets till 30 November, 2013 following representation of banks. According to the report of a RBI working group early cases of domestic counterfeit and skimming are being observed as far as debit cards are concerned. Card skimming is the illegal copying of information from the magnetic strip of a credit/debit card)

2) In a major milestone in India’s space history, ISRO’s Mars Orbiter mission on 1 December, 2013 ventured out of Earth’s sphere of influence to begin its 300-day journey to Mars. What is this manoeuvre named, in which the Mars Orbiter ‘Mangalyaan’ teared itself away from Earth’s gravitational pull to begin its 680-million Km journey to the red planet? – “Trans-Mars Injection” (During this manoeuvre, the spacecraft’s 440 Newton liquid engine was fired for about 22 minutes providing a velocity increment of 648 meters/second to the spacecraft)

3) Insurance giant Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) recently decided to stop selling 34 policies, including popular policies like Jeevan Anand, Jeevan Madhur and Jeevan Saral during December 2013. What is the main reason for this decision of LIC? - To comply with new regulatory guidelines (These policies are not in conformity with the provisions of new regulations on non-linked insurance products, linked insurance products and health insurance products. The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) had extended the deadline for implementation of new individual product regulations for the life insurance industry by three months to 31 December 2014. The new guidelines are aimed at making insurance policies more customer-friendly)


4) State Bank of India (SBI) proposes to raise Rs 9,576 crore through a Qualified Institutional Placement (QIP) or a Follow-on Public Offering (FPO) in expectation of a surge in its loan book and to meet Basel-III norms. An increase in capital is required in the backdrop of guidelines on implementation of Basel-III capital regulations in India. These capital norms are implemented in a phased manner in India from – 1 April, 2013

5) Indian badminton star PV Sindhu won which grand prix badminton title with an emphatic win in the final on 1 December, 2013? - Macau Open Grand Prix Gold (Sindhu defeated Canada's Michelle Li in the finals by 21-15, 21-12 in merely 37 minutes to clinch her second Grand Prix Gold title after the Malaysia Open in May. The year has been a remarkable one for the Hyderabad-based shuttler. Besides the Malaysia Open triumph, she also became India's first women's singles medallist at the World Championship with back-to-back wins against fancied Chinese rivals in the mega-event)

6) Which Indian golfer won the Indonesia Open Golf Tournament on 1 December, 2013 to lift his fifth Asian Tour title? - Gaganjeet Bhullar (Malaysia’s Nicholas Fung and Thailand’s Chapchai Nirat finished three strokes behind Bhullar in joint second. Another Indian, Jyoti Randhawa claimed fifth place at 11-under-273 while Anirban Lahiri secured tied sixth at 10-under-274)


7) World AIDS Day was observed on 1 December 2013 across the globe to raise awareness about the HIV/ AIDS. HIV/AIDS remains a major global issue, having claimed more than 36 million lives so far since the discovery of the
virus more than 20 years ago. According to the World Health Organisation, there were approximately 35.3 million people living with HIV in 2012. The theme for this year is “Getting to Zero”- means zero new infections, zero discrimination and zero AIDS-related deaths.

8) International Day for the Abolition of Slavery is being observed on 2 December 2013 across the world to create awareness about the prevention of human trafficking and the exploitation of human being. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said, it is vital to give special consideration to ending modern-day slavery and servitude which affects the poorest, most socially excluded groups like migrants, women, minorities and indigenous peoples.

9) M.V. Tanksale, former Chairman and Managing Director of Central Bank of India, has taken over as Chief Executive of the Indian Banks’ Association. Tanksale succeeds K. Ramakrishnan, who was at the helm of the Association for five years up to November 30, 2013. IBA, which has 176 members comprising public sector banks, private sector banks, foreign banks and urban co-operative banks, was established in 1946 to promote sound and progressive banking principles, practices and conventions in the country.

10) J S Saharia, a 1978 batch IAS officer, took over as the new Chief Secretary of Maharashtra on Saturday. He succeeds Jayant Kumar Banthia, a 1977 batch IAS officer, who was the Chief Secretary since June 2012 and retired on Saturday.


11) US actor Paul Walker died in a car accident in Southern California on 30 November 2013. He was 40. The incident occurred while he was coming back
from his organization's charity event. Paul Walker was working on the latest “Fast & Furious” movie at the time of his death. He also starred in the suspense drama, “Hours”, a movie that is set for release in December 2013.

12) The French Ambassador to India, Francois Richier, has embarked on a three-day visit to Bihar starting today. This trip is part of a series of travels throughout India to expand the scope of Indo-French cooperation and develop joint, forward-looking projects in various fields, notably economic exchanges, education, science and culture.

13) Social networking giant Facebook is in talks to acquire Bangalore-based product start-up Little Eye Labs. Sources close to the development said the deal was expected to be announced in the next few weeks. It will be Facebook's first acquisition of a product firm in India. It will also be a first for software product think-tank Indian Software Products Industry Roundtable (iSpirt), which has facilitated the deal through its M&A Connect programme, which helps Indian product companies find global buyers. Little Eye Labs builds performance analysis and monitoring tools that identify and fix performance problems for Android app developers.

14) The Department of Posts has launched Express Parcel and Business Parcel Service in 20 cities at a function in New Delhi on Monday. Launching the service, Secretary, Department of Posts, P. Gopinath said, the Express Parcel Service is a premium service available for retail as well as bulk customers. This service is aimed at promoting e-Commerce market in the country by offering reliable and cost efficient service solutions.

15) East Timor film ‘Beatriz’s War’ bagged Golden Peacock award for Best Film at the 44th International Film Festival of India at Panaji, Goa. The film, directed by Bety Reis and Luigi Acquisto, is a passionate story of one woman’s conviction to remain true to the man she loves. The award carries a Golden Peacock, a certificate and a Cash Prize of 40 lakh Rupees. Indian Director Kaushik Ganguli bags the award for Best Director for his Bengali film ‘Apur Panchali’. The award carries a Silver Peacock, a certificate and a cash prize of 15 lakh Rupees.

16) India has retained its top position in the latest ICC ODI rankings and second position in the Test cricket rankings. Virat Kohli is the top batsman in ODI list while R. Ashwin is the top All rounder in the Test rankings. Both the lists were released by the International Cricket Council in Dubai today.

17) The Indian cricket team continued to be second in the ICC Test rankings with R Ashwin topping the all-rounders' chart in the latest list issued on Sunday. India placed behind South Africa with 119 points, which is just 12 less than the Proteas' tally. The teams are set to clash in a two-Test and thee ODI series starting 5th December in South Africa. Cheteshwar Pujara is the best-placed Indian batsman at sixth with Virat Kohli following him at a distant 20th spot.

18) Ethiopian runners dominate 28th Pune International Marathon. Runners from Ethiopia regained their supremacy by outwitting their arch rivals Kenya as they captured top honours in both the men's and women's events in the 28th edition of the Pune International Marathon today. Belachew Endale Abayneh won the men's 42.195 km race in 2 hours, 17 minutes and 52 seconds, while Aberu Zewude Tesema claimed the top spot in the women's half distance race clocking 1 hour, 16 minutes and 54 seconds.

19) Indian shuttler PV Sindhu won the Women's Singles trophy at the Macau Open Grand Prix Gold Badminton Tournament. In the title clash, Sindhu, defeated seventh seed Li Michelle of Canada in straight games, 21-15, 21-12. With this victory, Sindhu has bagged yet another Tier-III title this season, after her triumph at the Malaysia Open Grand Prix in May 2013. Besides the Malaysia Open triumph, she also became India's first women's singles medallist at the World Championship in August 2013. This was India's first singles medal at the World Championships since Prakash Padukone won a bronze in the 1983 edition. 


1) रिटेल तथा मर्चेन्ट आउटलेट्स  में डेबिट कार्ड के प्रयोग के सम्बन्ध में 1 दिसम्बर, 2013 से क्या नया नियम अनिवार्य कर दिया गया है? - 1 दिसम्बर से डेबिट कार्ड द्वारा रिटेल तथा मर्चेंट आउटलेट्स से की गई खरीद के लिए पिन नम्बर (PIN) पंच करना अब आवश्यक हो गया है (इसका अर्थ यह हुआ कि पिन कार्ड को याद रखे बिना डेबिट कार्ड स्वाइप कर खरीद नहीं की जा सकेगी। उल्लेखनीय है कि भारतीय रिज़र्व बैंक (RBI) ने जून 2013 में प्वाइंट ऑफ सेल (PoS) तथा मर्चेन्ट आउटलेट्स से की गई खरीद के लिए पिन नम्बर की पंचिंग के अनिवार्य नियम को लागू करने के लिए 30 नवम्बर 2013 तक की मोहलत दी थी। RBI के इस सम्बन्ध में एक कार्यसमूह की रिपोर्ट में यह उल्लेख किया गया था कि नकली तथा स्किमिंग करके डेबिट कार्ड बनाने के कुछ प्रारंभिक मामले भारत में सामने आने लगे हैं तथा पिन सम्बन्धी यह अनिवार्यता नियम डेबिट कार्ड के प्रयोग में अधिक सुरक्षा प्रदान करने के लिए लागू किया गया है)

2) भारतीय अंतरिक्ष अनुसंधान संगठन (ISRO) ने भारतीय अंतरिक्ष-विज्ञान के इतिहास में 1 दिसम्बर, 2013 को एक और मील का पत्थर हासिल करते हुए मंगल ग्रह के लिए भेजे गए मार्स ऑरबिटर "मंगलयान" को उसकी मंगल की 300-दिन लम्बी यात्रा के लिए रवाना करने के लिए पृथ्वी के गुरुत्वाकर्षण प्रभाव से निकालने में सफलता हासिल कर ली। पृथ्वी के गुरुत्वाकर्षण प्रभाव से मुक्त करने वाले इस महत्वपूर्ण चक्र को किस नाम से जाना जाता है? - ट्रांस मार्स इंजेक्शन - “Trans-Mars Injection” (इस चक्र के दौरान मंगलयान के 440 न्यूटन क्षमता के तरल इंजन को लगभग 22 मिनट के लिए चलाया गया जिससे यान के वेग में 648 मीटर प्रति सेकेण्ड की वृद्धि हो गई)

3) भारत में जीवन बीमा क्षेत्र की सबसे बड़ी कम्पनी भारतीय जीवन बीमा निगम (LIC) ने हाल ही में निर्णय लिया है कि वह दिसम्बर 2013 के दौरान जीवन आनंद, जीवन मधुर व जीवन सरल जैसी लोकप्रिय पालिसियों समेत कुल 34 पालिसियों की बिक्री बंद करने की घोषणा की है। इस निर्णय के पीछे मुख्य कारण क्या है? - क्योंकि ये पालिसियां बीमा पालिसियों के बारे में जारी किए गए नए दिशानिर्देशों का पालन नहीं करती हैं (उल्लेखनीय है कि भारत में बीमा क्षेत्र की नियामक संस्था IRDA द्वारा गैर-लिंक्ड बीमा उत्पाद, लिंक्ड बीमा उत्पाद तथा स्वास्थ्य बीमा पालिसियों के बारे में जारी किए गए नए दिशानिर्देशों का अनुपालन न करने वाली की 34 पालिसियों को बंद किया जायेगा। IRDA ने यह दिशानिर्देश बीमा पालिसियों को उपभोक्ताओं के लिए अधिकाधिक लाभकारी बनाने के उद्देश्य के लिए जारी किया था)

4) भारतीय स्टेट बैंक (SBI) ने घोषणा की है कि भविष्य में बेसल स्तंभ तीन मानकों (Basel-III norms) के अनुपालन तथा उधार पुस्तिका में वृद्धि के चलते रु. 9,576 करोड़ क्वालीफाइड इंस्टीट्यूशनल प्लेसमेण्ट (Qualified Institutional Placement (QIP)) अथवा फालो-ऑन पब्लिक ऑफरिंग (Follow-on Public Offering (FPO)) के जरिए प्राप्त करना प्रस्तावित करता है। बैंक की पूँजी में वृद्धि करना इसलिए अपेक्षित है क्योंकि भारतीय बैंकों में बेसल स्तंभ तीन मानकों के दिशानिर्देशों का अनुपालन शुरू होगा। इस मानक का अनुपालन भारत में क्रमबद्ध तरीके से कब से शुरू होगा? - 1 अप्रैल, 2014 से
