9th WTO OMC

1) The 9th Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization (WTO) starts on 3 December, 2013 at – Bali, Indonesia (The 4-day WTO Ministerial Conference is being held from 3 to 6 December. The Ministerial Conference is the topmost decision-making body of the WTO, which usually meets every two years. It brings together all members of the WTO, all of which are countries or customs unions. The Ministerial Conference can take decisions on all matters under any of the multilateral trade agreements. The World Trade Organization (WTO) deals with the global rules of trade between nations. Its main function is to ensure that trade flows as smoothly, predictably and freely as possible)

2) Which state became the first one in India to introduce PVC Electoral Photo Identity Card (PVC EPIC) recently? – Tripura (Tripura introduced the PVC-EPIC on 30 November, 2013. The card was simultaneously introduced in 23 sub-divisions of all the eight districts of the State. The specialty of this card is that it has many scientific security features to prevent duplication, forging and tampering. Unlike the present paper voter's card, the PVC-EPIC has inserted coded information of the elector. The information and government logos of the new EPIC would be visible only in ultraviolet light. PVC-EPIC have been issued as mandated by the Election Commission of India (ECI)

3) The annual Hornbill Festival 2013 was inaugurated by President Pranab Mukherjee on 1 December, 2013. This festival is held in which state every year? – Nagaland (Hornbill Festival is the biggest festival and premier event of Nagaland and is held every year in the month of December. The festival is named after a bird (Thornbill) found in the state and it showcases the rich tradition and cultural heritage of the Naga people. To revive, protect and preserve this heritage and to enable visitors to understand it, the Hornbill Festival is celebrated through a collaborative effort of all Naga tribes)

6) Nation celebrates Birth anniversary of Dr. Rajendra Prasad. India's first President Dr.Rajendra Prasad was born on 3rd December, 1884 in Saran
district of Bihar. After completing his primary education from Chhapra, he gave the entrance examination of Calcutta university at the age of 18. 8) Delhi votes tomorrow, triangular contest with AAP's debut. The entry of Arvind Kejriwal's AAP has changed the dimension of the fight in the polls and it will be interesting to see whether the newbie will just be a "spoiler" or win some seats as predicted by opinion polls, riding on its anti-corruption plank. A total of 1.19 crore voters are eligible to exercise their franchise tomorrow. There are over 4.05 lakh first-time voters. 

9) The crucial 3-day WTO Ministerial Conference will begin today in Indonesia city of Bali, India firm on commitment to asert its stand on Food Security. Meanwhile, Anand Sharma discussed WTO related position with Minister of Industry& Commerce, Zimbabwe Mr Mike Bimha on sidelines of WTO Ministerial. He also met South African Trade Minister Mr Rob Davies on sidelines of WTO Ministerial at Bali.

10) India today successfully test-fired indigenously developed nuclear-capable Prithvi-II missile with a strike range of 350 km from a test range at Chandipur in Odisha as part of a user trial by defence forces. The surface-to-surface missile was test-fired at around 10:05 AM from a mobile launcher in salvo mode from launch complex-3 of the Integrated Test Range, about 15 km from here, defence sources said.

11) Directorate General of Foreign Trade’s e-BRC project has won the 2013 eASIA Award under Trade Facilitation category. The award was announced by Asia Pacific Council for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business (AFACT) in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam on 29 November 2013. electronic Bank Realization Certificate (e-BRC) project was launched on 5 June 2012, to electronically transmit foreign exchange realization details on exports from the respective banks to Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).

12) Brahmaputra Cruises’ by Assam Bengal Navigation Company has been recognised by CNN International as one of the top 10 Most Adventurous Cruises in the World for 2013. The ‘Brahmaputra Cruises (Jungle Book Tour/India)’ has been ranked sixth among the cruises including the Amazon, the Antartica, the North Pole, Australia and Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, Managing Director of Assam Bengal Navigation Company, Ashish Phookan, told PTI.

13) India has decided to give $1 million to the trust of Organisation for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons at The Hague for the destruction of Syria’s chemical weapons and related facilities, a move that will strengthen its case for inclusion in Geneva-II talks next month. Apart from the financial assistance, India has offered the services of its experts to help in the destruction of Damascus’ chemical weapons arsenal and related facilities, a Ministry of External Affairs statement said here today.

14) 29th Junior National Athletics Championships will kick off in Bangalore today. Around 2,000 athletes from across the country are expected to take part in the championships.The five-day meet, will have 125 events in eight age-group competitions, four for boys and an equal number for the girls.

15) 42 year old leg spinner Pravin Tambe was on Monday surprisingly included in the Mumbai Ranji Trophy team to take on Jharkhand in the four-day Group A match starting at the Wankhede Stadium on December 6. 

16) India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has won this year's LG People's Choice Award, thus becoming only the second Indian cricketer to win the coveted prize after just-retired Sachin Tendulkar. Dhoni has now become only the third cricketer to win this award after Tendulkar, who was the first-ever recipient in 2010, and Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara, who won it in 2011 and 2012. Other nominees for this year's LG People's Choice Award were Australia's Michael Clarke, England's Alastair Cook, India's Virat Kohli, and South Africa's AB de Villiers.


1) विश्व व्यापार संगठन के नौंवें मंत्री-स्तरीय सम्मेलन (9th Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization (WTO)) की शुरूआत 3 दिसम्बर, 2013 को किस स्थान पर हुई? - बाली, इण्डोनेशिया में (इस 4-दिवसीय सम्मेलन का आयोजन बाली में 3 से 6 दिसम्बर के बीच हो रहा है। उल्लेखनीय है कि मंत्री-स्तरीय सम्मेलन विश्व व्यापार संगठन के निर्णय लेने वाली सर्वोच्च संस्था है तथा इसे प्राय: प्रत्येक दो वर्ष के अंतराल पर आहूत किया जाता है। इसमें विश्व व्यापार संगठन के सभी सदस्य शामिल होते हैं, जिसमें सदस्य देश अथवा व्यापार संगठन के मंत्री प्रतिनिधित्व करते हैं। यह सम्मेलन बहुपक्षीय व्यापार को बढ़ाने से सम्बन्धित सभी महत्वपूर्ण मुद्दों पर संधियां करने के लिए अधिकृत है। विश्व व्यापार संगठन विभिन्न देशों के बीच परस्पर व्यापार को बढ़ावा देने वाला सर्वप्रमुख संगठन है जिसका उद्देश्य वैश्विक व्यापार को बिना किसी रुकावट के अधिकाधिक संवर्द्धित करना है। यह संस्था बहुपक्षीय व्यापार को बढ़ावा देने के लिए ऐसे सम्मेलनों का निरंतर आयोजन करती है)

2) भारत का वह पहला राज्य कौन सा है जहां हाल ही में मतदाताओं के लिए फोटो वाले PVC पहचान-पत्र जारी किए गए हैं? - त्रिपुरा (ऐसे मतदाता पहचान-पत्र जारी करने वाला त्रिपुरा देश का पहला राज्य बना है। ये PVC कार्ड त्रिपुरा के सभी 8 जिलों की 23 सब-डिवीजनों में एक साथ जारी किए गए। इस कार्ड की मुख्य विशेषता यह है कि इनमें ऐसे सुरक्षा उपाय लगाए गए हैं जिनसे इनकी नकल करना तथा इनमें कोई बदलाव करना आसान नहीं होगा। इस कार्ड में परंपरागत कागज के पहचान-पत्र की तरह से कागज पर मतदाता की पहचान उल्लिखित करने के बजाय एक कोडेड तरीके से सारी जानकारी डाली गई है। तमाम महत्वपूर्ण जानकारी को परा-बैंगनी रोशनी में देखा जा सकेगा। उल्लेखनीय है कि भारत के चुनाव आयोग ने देश में ऐसे अधिक सुरक्षित तथा अपेक्षाकृत अधिक मजबूत मतदाता पहचान-पत्र जारी करने के दिशानिर्देश जारी किए थे)

3) भारत के राष्ट्रपति प्रणब मुखर्जी ने 1 दिसम्बर, 2013 को वार्षिक हार्नबिल महोत्सव (Hornbill Festival 2013) का उद्घाटन किया। यह महोत्सव हर साल भारत के किस राज्य में आयोजित किया जाता है? - नागालैण्ड में (हार्नबिल महोत्सव नागालैण्ड का सर्वप्रमुख महोत्सव है जिसका आयोजन हर साल दिसम्बर माह के दौरान किया जाता है। इस महोत्सव का नाम हार्नबिल नामक राज्य में पाई जाने वाली एक चिड़िया के नाम पर रखा गया है तथा इसमें राज्य के विविध रीति-रिवाजों और संस्कृति को दर्शाया जाता है। राज्य की कला और संस्कृति को अधिकाधिक लोगों तथा राज्य में आने वाले पर्यटकों के बीच दर्शाने के उद्देश्य से इस महोत्सव में राज्य की सभी प्रमुख जनजातियों के प्रतिनिधि भारी संख्या में भाग लेते हैं)
