CHOGM-2013                            


1) The 3-day 23rd Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) summit 2013 started at Sri Lankan capital Colombo on 15 November, 2013. It was the first time that CHOGM, the summit meet of 53-member grouping of Commonwealth nations was held in Sri Lanka. After how many years CHOGM has been organized in an Asian country? – 24 years (Last CHOGM is Asia was held in 1989 when the summit was organized in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. An important aspect associated with this CHOGM summit was the fact that it was for the first time in 40 years that Queen Elizabeth was not present at the CHOGM)

3) The 2013 United Nations Climate Change Conference (UNCCC) started from 11 November, 2013 in Warsaw, Poland and will conclude on 22 November. It is the 19th yearly session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 19) to the 1992 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the 9th session of the Meeting of the Parties (CMP 9) to the 1997 Kyoto
Protocol. What is the main objective of this conference? – To reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) to limit the global temperature increase to 2 degrees Celsius (Over 10,000 participants from 189 countries are participating in this conference)

4) Spiritual guru Jagadguru Kripalu Maharaj passed away on 15 November, 2013 at the age of 91 at a private hospital in Gurgaon following a brain injury. He was the preceptor of Jagadguru Kripalu Parishat, a worldwide Hindu non-profit organization with five main spiritual centres, four in India and one in the USA. Where was the headquarters of his worldwide organisation situated? – Mangarh, Pratapgarh (Uttar Pradesh)

5) Who drew the first blood in the ongoing World Chess Championship match between defending champion Viswanathan Anand and Magnus Carlsen of Norway at Chennai on 15 November, 2013? – Magnus Carlsen (Carlsen defeated Anand in the fifth game of the match to lead 3-2. Now 7 more games are remaining in this match)

6) Which life insurance company announced signing up for supporting Sudhir Kumar Chaudhary, one of the greatest fans of master blaster Sachin Tendulkar, as part of its corporate social responsibility initiative? – Reliance Life Insurance Company (As part of its corporate social responsibility, Reliance Life will offer financial aid to Sudhir to help him continue his passion of loving the sport. Sudhir is usually seen with his body painted in the tri-colour, waving our national flag and blowing the conch shell during cricket matches as part of his love for cricket and Sachin Tendulkar. Sudhir, who hails from Muzaffarpur in Bihar, continues his passion for the game on public support without any permanent job. He left his permanent job in a dairy firm at Muzaffarpur in 2006 to pursue his passion for cheering the cricket team on public support)

7) Sachin & CN Rao to be honoured with Bharat Ratna Award. Sachin first sportsperson to win country’s highest civilian honour
with Bharat Ratna. In a befitting tribute to a stellar career, especially on the day he was given a tearful farewell, Prime Minister's Office (PMO) on Saturday announced the country's highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna, for Sachin Tendulkar. The cricketing legend became the first sportsperson to get the award. The award will also be conferred on eminent scientist Prof CNR Rao. Prof Rao is an eminent scientist and a well recognised international authority on solid state and materials chemistry. He has published over 1,400 research papers and 45 books.

8) ICC hails Tendulkar as a ‘sporting genius’. The ICC today paid rich tributes to Sachin Tendulkar, who retired from international cricket today after playing his 200th Test match, with its Chief Executive Dave Richardson saying that “sporting geniuses like Sachin are rare phenomenons”.

9) Tendulkar era ends with India's 2-0 sweep over West Indies. India has wrapped up an impressive innings and 126 runs victory over West Indies to get a 2-0 series win in the last Test of cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar, who got a warm send-off by his teammates. The visitors were bowled out for 187 after India made 495 in their first innings. Pragyan Ojha was declared the Man of the Match while Rohit Sharma was named the Man of the Series.

10) National Press day is being celebrated across the country today. The day is symbolic of a free and responsible press in India. This is the day on which the Press Council of India started functioning as a moral watchdog to ensure that not only did the press maintain the high standards expected from this powerful medium but also that it was not fettered by the influence or threats of any extraneous factors.

11) International Day for Tolerance was observed on 16 November 2013 across the world to educate people about the need for tolerance in society and to aware them about the dangers of intolerance. International Day for Tolerance is celebrated worldwide every year on 16 November to promote the Tolerance among the public. The day was first observed in 1995.

12) Lord Swraj Paul, a leading NRI industrialist and educationist was presented with the International Indian of the Decade award on 15 November 2013. Swraj Paul was presented the award for his outstanding achievements in the fields of industry, education and philanthropy. Lord Swraj Paul is the founder of the UK-based steel and engineering multinational company Caparo, which at present employs about 10000 people worldwide from UK, USA and India.

13) The 22nd Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, CHOGM began in Colombo, Sri Lanka on 15 November 2013. The Summit was inaugurated by Prince Charles of England, who is representing Queen Elizabeth at the Commonwealth Summit. The theme for CHOGM 2013 is Growth with Equity; Inclusive Development. External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid is represented the India in the 22nd Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).

14) India continued to enjoy the second position in the recently released Reliance ICC T20I Team Rankings. With 123 rating points in its kitty, India are five points behind leaders Sri Lanka (128). South Africa, meanwhile, has moved into the third position in the T20I team rankings after winning both the matches against Pakistan in Dubai, an ICC statement said.

15) Former Cyprus president Glafkos Clerides died at 94. His death was announced by his personal physician and long time friend Iossif Kassios.

16) Lord Swraj Paul, a leading NRI industrialist and educationist was presented with the International Indian of the Decade award on 15 November 2013. Swraj Paul was presented the award for his outstanding achievements in the fields of industry, education and philanthropy.

17) Defending champion Viswanathan Anand lost to world No.1 Magnus Carlsen after 58 moves in a gruelling fifth game of the World Chess Championship in Chennai on Friday. Carlsen registered the first victory of the tournament after the previous four games all ended in draws.

18) Ram Kripalu Tripathi, popularly known as Jagadguru Kripaluji Maharaj passed away on 15 November 2013 at New Delhi. He was 91 years old. He was given the title of Jagadguru (the world teacher) at the age of 34 years, in 1957.

3) जलवायु परिवर्तन पर संयुक्त राष्ट्र का सम्मेलन (United Nations Climate Change Conference) 11 नवम्बर, 2013 को पोलैण्ड की राजधानी वार्सा (Warsaw) में शुरू हुआ। 22 नवम्बर, 2013 तक चलने वाला यह सम्मेलन 1992 में हुए संयुक्त राष्ट्र के जलवायु परिवर्तन पर हुए ढांचागत सम्मेलन (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)) का 19वां संस्करण (COP 19) तथा 1997 की क्योटो संधि (Kyoto Protocol) को अमल में लाने के लिए आयोजित पक्षों का नौंवां सम्मेलन (CMP 9) है। इस सम्मेलन में मुख्यत: किस उद्देश्य को प्राप्त करने की दिशा में सदस्य देशों के बीच चर्चा हो रही है? - ग्रीनहाउस गैसों के उत्सर्जन को इतना घटाया जाय ताकि वैश्विक तापमान में हो रही वृद्धि को 2 डिग्री सेल्सियस तक सीमित किया जा सके (उल्लेखनीय है कि इस सम्मेलन में 189 देशों के दस हजार से अधिक प्रतिनिधि हिस्सा ले रहे हैं)
