Rapid-metro-Gurgaon                    


1) The Rapid Metro in Gurgaon, which will connect Delhi Metro commuters to six key places within the city, was inaugurated on 14 November, 2013. This project is a public-private partnership (PPP) project between which two entities? – HUDA (Haryana Urban Development Authority) and IL&FS Rail Ltd. (Rapid Metro timings will be in sync with Delhi Metro, so that commuters won't have to wait for the local loop train. While there are a total of six stations in the network, the one at Shankar Chowk will become operational later as work is still not complete)

2) The white-water river rafting team “IAF Aqua Scullers” of the Indian Air Force (IAF) on 13 November, 2013 created history by completing the longest rafting expedition in India. This team successfully completed its mission of rafting over 3,000 km on River Ganges. This expedition was between which two points situated on the Ganges? – From Gangotri (Uttarakhand) to Ganga Sagar (West Bengal) – Some of the salient features of this mission included the shortest duration ever (16 days) taken to raft down the entire length of Ganga and being the first among the Indian Armed forces to have accomplished such a feat in river rafting. This expedition was led by Wg Cdr Paramvir Singh)

3) Which Indian Naval base was chosen as the base for stationing of India’s second aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya, which would be commissioned into the Indian Navy on 16 November, 2013 at Russia? – Karwar Naval Base, Karnataka

4) Indian cricket maestro Sachin Tendulkar created yet another record of becoming the first-ever player to feature in 200 international test matches as he came to play the last test match of his amazing career at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium against the West Indies in the second and final match of the test series on 14 November, 2013. Playing 200 test matches is perceived as an unbelievable feat as till now only one Indian player has played over 150 test matches. Who is this player? – Rahul Dravid, who has featured for Indian team in 164 test matches (Top 7 test playing players, who have played in 150 or more test matches are - Sachin Tendulkar (200), Ricky Ponting (168), Steve Waugh (168), Jacques Kallis (164), Rahul Dravid (164), Allan Border (156) and Shivnarine Chanderpaul (150))

5) Who on 14 November, 2013 became the first West Indian cricketer to play 150 tests for the team? - Shivnarine Chanderpaul (Chanderpaul became the seventh player to reach this landmark while featuring in the second test match of the two-match test series against India at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. Chanderpaul has made most appearances in Tests for West Indies. He is followed by Brian Lara and Courtney Walsh among his countrymen. He scored 25 runs in the first innings of this test match as West Indies collapsed for just 182 runs)


6) Sachin Tendulkar is Time magazine’s ‘Person of the Moment’. Accolades continued to pour in for the retiring Sachin Tendulkar
with the ‘Time’ magazine naming the legendary Indian batsman its “Person of the Moment” while as he plays his last Test in Mumbai.

7) Maldives President Mohamed Waheed on Friday stepped down as President as the country prepared to hold the second round of the Presidential election. The second round of the Presidential election will take place on Saturday with the Maldives Democratic Party candidate and former President Mohamed Nasheed being the frontrunner.


8) Siddhartha Birla, founder and Chairman of Xpro India Ltd, and Chairman Digjam Ltd, will be the next President of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry. Birla will head the chamber in 2014. Presently Ms. Naina Lal Kidwai is the President of FICCI.

9) Internet giant Google and investment firm KKR will invest $400 million in six solar plants in California and Arizona, the companies announced on Thursday. The plants are currently being developed and are expected to be operational by January 2014. They will be managed by Recurrent Energy, a California solar developer.

10) Max Bupa Health Insurance has entered into a bancassurance tie-up with Deutsche Bank. With this alliance, Max Bupa will offer its comprehensive health insurance plans to Deutsche Bank customers. This tie-up follows the insurance regulator IRDA’s guidelines allowing banks to act as corporate agents of one standalone health insurance company in addition to their existing one life and one non-life insurance companies.

11) The country’s largest bank State Bank of India plans to raise tier-II capital in the range of about Rs 5,000 crore before March. Besides, the Government has also promised to infuse Rs 2,000 crore through a preferential allotment of shares.

12) Professor Mushirul Hasan, the former Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia on 14 November 2013 was conferred with the Jawaharlal Nehru Fellowship by the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund. The title of the Hasan’s fellowship project is Roads to Freedom – Prison, Prisoners and the Raj.

13) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and British Prime Minister David Cameron, on Thursday, expressed satisfaction that trade ties between the two countries had been resilient despite the continuing global economic slowdown and difficulties in the Euro Zone. The two Prime Ministers discussed the Bangalore-Mumbai Economic Corridor (BMEC) and were happy at the progress that had been made, sources said.

14) RINL setting up 120-MW plant on waste gas from blast furnace. The Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (Visakhapatnam steel plant) is taking all steps to enhance its captive power capacity and is also using waste gas heat to generate power, according to sources. The steel plant is currently having five turbo generators, three each of 60 MW capacity and two each of 67.5 MW capacity, taking the total captive power generation capacity to 315 MW.

15) Lenovo launches Yoga Tablet. Aiming at a higher market share, leading personal computer maker Lenovo on Friday announced the launch of its new Yoga Tablet priced between Rs 22,999 to Rs 28,999.

16) India is No. 2 in seeking user info from Google while the US topped the list with 10,918 requests, India followed with 2,691 during the January-June period this year.

17) Google wins book scanning case. A federal judge rejected a lawsuit on Thursday by authors aimed at stopping Google’s book scanning project, ruling that Google’s plan to scan and digitise 20 million books constitutes fair use under US copyright laws.

18) Reliance Life Insurance Company has signed up to support Sudhir Kumar Chaudhary, one of the greatest fans of master blaster Sachin Tendulkar. As part of its corporate social responsibility, Reliance Life will offer financial aid to Sudhir to help him continue his passion of loving the sport. This private life insurer has also launched a new campaign with Sudhir with a view to supporting this big fan. The campaign is also aimed to give out a larger message that retirement is definitive and needs to be properly planned.

19) India’s 1st ever mountain biking race on Nov 17. Cycling enthusiasts of the country will get to witness their own version of ‘Tour the Himalayas’ with India’s first-ever mountain biking race all set to be held here on November 17. Being organised jointly by the Mountain Track Biking Association (MTBA) of Uttarakhand, Cycling Federation of India (CFI) and Artsmith Concepts and Visions with support from the state government and the Indian Army, the event will have races in three categories for the elite riders (20kms), the amateurs (15kms) and the teens (10kms), MTBA, Uttarakhand president Rahul Jain told reporters here today.

20) Veteran journalist R.K. Mukker passed away on 13 November 2013 after prolonged illness. He was 88 years old.  He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter. He died at Sahibabad in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad district.

(उल्लेखनीय है कि रैपिड मेट्रो के सेवा का समय दिल्ली मेट्रो के सेवा समय को ध्यान में रखकर निर्धारित किया जायेगा ताकि यात्री लूप सेवा का इस्तेमाल किए बिना आसानी से आपस में जुड़ सकें। इस परियोजना में जहाँ कुल 6 स्टेशन गुड़गाँव में स्थापित किए जायेंगे वहीं शंकर चौक स्टेशन का काम अभी पूरा नहीं हुआ है जोकि जल्द पूरा किए जाने की संभावना है)

2) भारतीय वायु सेना (IAF) की "एक्वा स्क्लर्स" (“Aqua Scullers”) नामक रिवर राफ्टिंग टीम ने 13 नवम्बर, 2013 को उस समय इतिहास रच दिया जब उसने भारत के अभी तक के सबसे लम्बे रिफर राफ्टिंग अभियान को सफलतापूर्वक पूरा किया। इस टीम ने गंगा नदी पर 3,000 किलोमीटर से भी अधिक लम्बे अपने अभियान के दौरान नदी पर स्थित किस स्थान से किस स्थान तक का सफर किया? - गंगोत्री (उत्तराखण्ड) से गंगा सागर (पश्चिम बंगाल) तक (उल्लेखनीय है कि वायु सेना के इस साहसी अभियान के कुछ प्रमुख बिन्दुओं में शामिल है - गंगा नदी की पूरी लम्बाई को सबसे कम दिनों (मात्र 16 दिन) में पूरा करना और देश की सशस्त्र सेनाओं मे से किसी द्वारा पहली बार इतने साहसी रिवर राफ्टिंग अभियान को अंजाम दिया जाना। इस अभियान का नेतृत्व विंग कमाण्डर परमवीर सिंह ने किया)
