2) The draft regulations on power tariff issued by the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) recently are likely to reduce electricity rates for consumers but the power producers would have to increase efficiency to recover better revenues. These tariff rules would be mandatory for all power plants selling electricity under norms set by CERC cost-plus mechanism. The draft regulations of CERC are to come into effect from – 1 April, 2014 (This would impact all power plants of public sector companies such as NTPC and NHPC, while it would impact selected stations of private power producers such as Tata Power’s Maithon and Lanco’s Udupi. The draft regulations do not allow grossing up of taxes, which would be negative for NTPC. Moreover, sharing of financial gains on account of better operating metrics is further tightened in ratio of 3:1. However, the final regulations could be different from the draft as has happened in the past, however given the quantum of negative impact is high compared to previous draft regulations that even if the norms are relaxed a bit it would still be negative)
3) State-run Indian Oil Corp has emerged as the country’s biggest company in terms of annual revenue, followed by Mukesh Ambani-led private sector giant Reliance Industries at the second place, as per an annual list of Fortune 500 companies in India in Fortune magazine’s Indian edition. Among the top ten companies in this list, the highest number of companies is from which sector? – Energy Sector (There are as many as seven energy companies in the top 10 list. Indian Oil Corp (IOC) was the biggest with annual revenue of Rs 4,75,867 crore, followed by Reliance Industries (RIL) with a full-year revenue of Rs 4,09,883 crore. This is followed by Bharat Petroleum (Rs 2,44,822 crore) at the third place and Hindustan Petroleum (Rs 2,17,771 crore) at fourth. Other entities in the list are State Bank of India (5th rank), Tata Motors (6th), ONGC (7th), Tata Steel (8th), Essar Oil (9th) and Coal India (10th))
4) Top 30 loan defaulters of public sector banks (PSBs) account for more than one-third of total gross non-performing assets (NPAs) of state-run lenders. This information was given in the Parliament on 10 December, 2013. According to this information what is the ratio of top 30 NPAs as a percentage of gross NPAs, in respect of public sector banks, as on September 2013? – 35.5% (This figure stands at 38.8% for all banks in India. The gross non-performing assets (GNPA) amount of top 30 accounts of public sector banks (PSBs) stood at Rs. 72,174 crore, while for all banks it was Rs. 91,667 crore at the end of September 2013. In case of nationalised banks, the top 30 defaulters contributed 43.8 per cent to the GNPA with Rs. 55,663 crore. 5) The price of the LPG cylinder was hiked by Rs 3.46 per cylinder on 10 December, 2013. What was the reason for this increase? – Due to the increase in the commission of the LPG dealers (The hike came into effect after the government accepted a recommendation for increasing the commission paid to dealers by over 9%. The Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell, the fuel pricing arm of the Oil Ministry, had recommended raising the commission paid to dealers by Rs 3.46 per 14.2-kg cylinder to Rs 40.71)
6) Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar, who passed away on 10 December 2013, was the last scion of which royal family of Karnataka? – The Mysore Royal Family (Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar was the only son of Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar, the last ruling Maharaja of Mysore. 7) Homosexuality is a criminal offence: Supreme Court; In a blow to gay rights activists, the Supreme Court today upheld the constitutional validity of the penal provision making gay sex an offence punishable with upto life imprisonment. A bench of justices G.S Singhvi and S.J Mukhopadhaya set aside the Delhi High Court’s verdict which had in 2009 decriminalised gay sex among consenting adults in private. As soon as the verdict was pronounced, gay activists in the court looked visibly upset.
8) Wipro Chairman Azim Premji, 68, won the Economic Times Lifetime Achievement Award 2013 for his role in creating India's third-largest software exporter and also for the impressive scale of his philanthropy. The 2013 ET Awards for Corporate Excellence were given in Mumbai on 9 December 2013. The ET Awards were decided by a jury headed by Anshu Jain, co-CEO of Deutsche Bank. 10) General Motors named Mary Barra as its new chief executive on Tuesday, making her the first woman to lead a major car manufacturing company in the United States. The 51-year-old — who previously served as Senior Vice-President for global product development — will replace current CEO Dan Akerson, Detroit-based General Motors (GM) confirmed in a statement.
11) The last King of the erstwhile Mysore royal family, Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wodeyar passed away in Bangalore on 10 December 2013 due to heart attack. Maharaja Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wodeyar Bahadur also known as Srikanta Wadeyar was the last prince of Mysore Kingdom under Wodeyar dynasty. Wodeyar Dynasty ruled the Kingdom of Mysore between 1399 and 1950. Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wodeyar was born in 1953. He was the only son of Maharaja Jayachamarajendra Wodiyar, the last ruling Maharaja of Mysore and his second wife Maharani Tripura Sundari Ammani Avaru.
12) Uruguay on 10 December 2013 became the first country in the world to legalise marijuana for recreational use with the state taking control of the trade. In this regard Uruguay senators gave the approval for government-sponsored bill. According to the new law-Registered Uruguayans over the age of 18 will be allowed to buy up to 40 grams of the drug a month. Tourists will be excluded. The government hopes it will help tackle drug cartels, but critics say it will expose more people to drugs.

14) Former world heavyweight champion and convicted rapist Mike Tyson has been banned from entering Britain and forced to cancel appearances to promote his new autobiography, his publishers said on Tuesday. There was a change in the UK immigration law in December 2012 of which we were unaware," said a spokesman for HarperCollins. “For this reason Mike had to change location to Paris to salvage his press obligations for the UK.” The 47-year-old, who was convicted of raping a teenage beauty queen in 1992, had been due to appear in London this week to promote his book, Undisputed Truth. British immigration rules ban anyone who has been sentenced to more than four years in prison from entering the country.
15) An Australian schoolboy has got his name written in record books after running 200m in 21.73secs - a record for his age group - it was also about 0.08sec quicker than what Usain Bolt ran as a 14-year old. Originally from the NSW southcoast, James Gallaugher made the record at his weekend performance in Townsville, News.com.au reported. He is one of the people making their claim for selection for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
